ISMA Champ Lichty takes MSA final at Sandusky

2012 ISMA Champion Mike Lichty sent the Midwest Supermodified Ass. (MSA)  presented by Town Money Saver out with a bang last Sunday afternoon at Sandusky (OH) Speedway by winning in grand fashion. Staring in sixth position in the season ending special 40 lap main event, Lichty took his Reed Salvage Chevrolet power machine to the front and never looked back setting a torrid pace on the field. Lichty sailed past then leader Jon Henes well before the halfway point and never wavered as the rest of the field set chase.

Dave McKnight Jr. and Henes would bring the field of winged thunder to the drop of the green to get things going in a rush down into turn one the front row would stay side by side, until a yellow flag flew before they got through turn four when MSA points leader Trent Stephens sailed of the turn three corner doing extensive damage to the nose of his burnt orange racer effectively ending his day way early. Once the field was realigned for a complete restart, the green would drop, and again Henes and McKnight blistered the track running wheel to wheel for nearly two full laps until Henes nudged to the point. Dropping into second, McKnight had a lot of company as the field bearded down coming in a hurry. Lichty, Johnny Benson, and 2010 MSA Champion Charlie Schultz were all coming, sailing by cars while getting to the front. Lichty would push past Henes to the lead and begin opening up on the field as Benson, Schultz, and a host of others battled for position. Just one lap before halfway Henes would spin coming of turn four bringing out the caution flag. This flag gave the field a chance to close up on track position and the drivers a deep welcome breath. Now for the restart Benson and Schultz was there, but so were a host of other very fast racers. Back under green Lichty showed his taking of the lead was no fluke as he jetted out in front never to be caught, leaving the field in his fumes. Schultz would fall in second behind Benson but then in the late stages suffer car issues and falls back as both DJ Shullick jr. and Moe Lilje would sail into the top five. At the finish it was Lichty by a landslide, with Benson, Shullick Jr., Lilje, and McKnight Jr. rounding out the top five.

“It’s been a good year,” stated Lichty. “We really started out strong with the ISMA win at the beginning of the season, and then we ran really consistent all year. I think we had six second place finishes this year, but that is just how it goes. Then to come in here today and win it’s just a good deal. I got great car owners and a good team; it is just a lot of hard work, time and effort. I just wanted to get to the front today as quick as I could and just lead some laps. It is a lot easier to control a race than pass to get there. When you surround yourself with good people you get good results,” finished the race winner.

16 cars were on hand for the season ending event. By just taking the green flag to start the 40 lap feature race Trent Stephens became the 2012 MSA Champion driver. He now is a two time Champion as he also nailed the Championship in 2011. Both years Stephens has driven the No. 19 Steve Stout Racing Chevrolet powered ACME Racing Kasper Auto Group machine. Schultz and Benson won their respective heats and Stephens set fast time with a lap of 14.580, to end the season.

Thank you!
