MARION (OH) – Defending Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) Champion Trent Stephens worked his way to the front and when the opportunity presented itself he was there to capitalize. Stephens had a lot of ground to make up if he was to catch race long leader, and 2013 ISMA Champion, Mike Lichty until fate settled in. Just two laps from the finish of the Sandusky (OH) Speedway Vikki Rodisel Memorial 30 lap race Lichty would drop a driveshaft and Stephens would take the point and nail down his first MSA presented by Adkins Glass victory of 2013. Lichty would come to the start on the outside of row one with pole sitter Matt Marlowe as the two blistered down into turn one of the Northern Ohio track. Coming off the turn two corner it was clear Lichty was in command as he blasted down the back stretch. Charlie Schultz and Mike Ordway Jr. would keep pace and try as they might could not get to very fast Lichty. Schultz would search for a line both high and low to try and gain some momentum to mount a charge but it just was not there, while behind Stephens was working his way up from his sixth starting position. Just two laps past the halfway point the first yellow of the race would fly and all that open track would disappear as the cars would now be nose to tail for a restart. However, all that restart did was give Stephens the opportunity to get past his teammate Ordway Jr. and then sail by Schultz but, by that time Lichty was gone, in his own zip code. Just as the white flag was about to wave coming off turn four the Reed Salvage ride of Lichty would drop low and coast down the front stretch minus the drive shaft as Stephens blistered past. On the restart, it was all Stephens and his Adkins Auto Glass, Hoosier Tire, PPG, Domino’s Pizza, Michelle’s Café, Shaffer Oil, Kasper Auto Group, Chevrolet Powered Steve Stout machine as he mastered the Sandusky oval yet again and coasted to the victory over Schultz, Moe Lilje, Ordway Jr., and Tim Ice rounding out the top five.

“It was a good run,” said Stephens. “It took all of 20 laps for it to come in though, so all my moves were in the last ten laps. I got a little lucky there with Mike dropping out there, I would not have been able to catch him with the time I had left. This is the way you want to start towards a Championship run. It was a good run for sure. We got the start down so hopefully stay the season,” finished Stephens. “We were not too bad tonight, for as much as we struggled last year,” stated runner up Schultz. “The caution really hurt us, it allowed Stephens to get by us. I think we came out of the box pretty good tonight, just a little bit off. I was pretty happy after the second warm up session. The car was just a little bit too tight. I can’t thank my whole team enough, MSA and Sandusky Speedway for putting this whole deal together for us,” finished Schultz.

“Not to be hateful, but we were a little more optimistic than third,” said Lilje. “But, we just missed it a little bit the car was too free on exit off the corners. This car will be here every weekend and we are looking forward to a real good season,” finished Lilje.

Feature Finish (30 laps): Trent Stephens, Charlie Schultz, Moe Lilje, Mike Ordway Jr., Tim Ice, Mike Litchy, Jon Henes, Kevin Jaycox Jr., Matt Marlowe
